Economy of Norway

Norway is rich in abundant resources such as crude oil, natural gas, minerals, seafood, wood, freshwater, and hydroelectric power. The oil industry makes up about one-fourth of the country’s gross domestic product. Norway has the fourth-highest per capita income in the world. Norway follows the model of welfare-oriented North European countries, providing universal healthcare insurance and grants for higher education in return for heavy taxes on citizens.

The country also has a comprehensive social security system. From 2001 to 2006 and again from 2009 to 2011, Norway succeeded in achieving the highest Human Development Index in the world.

Politics and government

Norway has one of the most developed democratic and rule-based governments in the world. Since 1814, approximately 45% of men (25 years or older) have had the right to vote, whereas in Britain, the equivalent figure was 20% (1832), in Sweden it was 5% (1866), and in Belgium it was 1.15% (1840). Social democracy and policies related to equality have made Norway a homogeneous society with a high level of public trust between different segments of society and between people and the government. The high level of trust has made economic growth easier and smoother.

Norway’s Constitution was adopted on May 17, 1814, inspired by the United States Declaration of Independence (1776) and the French Revolution (1798). Norway has a parliamentary system of government with a constitutional monarchy in which the King of Norway is the head of state and the Prime Minister is the head of government. According to the Constitution, which is the highest legal document in the country, power is divided among the legislative, executive, and judicial branches.

The King officially holds the executive power in this country. However, after the establishment of a parliamentary system in this country, the duties of the King became highly ceremonial and formal. For example, the King must formally appoint or dismiss the Prime Minister and other ministers of the executive branch after being approved by Parliament. Similarly, the King of Norway is also the Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces and is recognized outside the country as the symbol of unity with the title of the highest diplomatic authority. Harald V of the House of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg was crowned as the King of Norway on January 17, 1991, after the death of his father. He is the first Norwegian king born on the soil of this country since the 14th century. Haakon (born July 20, 1973), the King’s son, is the legal heir to the Norwegian throne.
